After several weeks of meandering episodes that felt not only stagnant, but also out of character of the usual writing quality, the How I Met Your Mother 8th season finale "Something New" gives fans what they've longed for for the entirety of the series, answers to who the mother is.

The episode as a while, acts not just as a finale to the season, but as a massive cliffhanger for all story lines we've followed the last season. Marshal finally gets his dream job of being a judge, though he must decide how to tell Lily who is about to embark with him to Rome for a year. It's already clear that Marshal has taken the job, but it's yet to be seen how this will play out with Lily and Marvin. While we know they stay together into the future, we don't know how she'll react, and if she'll stay or leave her family behind for the next year.

Meanwhile, there was a throwaway story about one last antic with Robin and Barney breaking up a truly obnoxious couple, only to force the couple into realizing their love of each other and becoming engaged. There really wasn't much point to this story other than to provide a little bit of screen time in this finale to the soon to be newly-weds.

The real story lies in Ted and Lily's quiet heart to heart, as Ted reveals he will leave New York for Chicago the morning after the wedding, just a few days from now. In the end, Ted's deeply broken heart can only cope with the idea of losing Robin in the one way we all cope with this type of pain, we run away. Now it is unknown if Ted will truly leave after the wedding, but we do know that it's because of his decision to leave the wedding early that he presumably will meet the mother at the train station.

We still don't know the circumstances that cause him to leave. We have to assume that Ted, finally unable to overcome his sadness, leaves the wedding early, which leads us to believe that there is also some kind of falling out at the wedding due to his bandaged hand. But even right until Robin and Barney's wedding, Ted still can't shake the notion that his heart still belongs to Robin, even if he has come to terms against it. Despite this seemingly final outcome, Ted still has that glimmer of romance inside of him, working to put together a perfect gift for Robin in her lost grandmother's necklace.

On the other hand, perhaps this is the catalyst to the falling out we may see next season. The necklace could be viewed by Barney (and Robin) as one final attempt to undermine Robin's conviction and her relationship with Barney. Is the necklace really a perfect gift for Robin, or a perfect gift to made Robin think about Ted one last time?

Finally, as the final scenes roll though, we get a sneak peak at what fans have longed for over the past 8 years, the reveal of who the mother is, though we have no idea what her name is, or any specific details on how Ted will meet her aside from after the wedding. Reveled to the audience only, we finally meet "Girl with the yellow umbrella" Cristin Milioti (known for her broadway performances of Once). Now all that is left is to see the story of how these two end up finally meeting and falling instantly in love. Hopefully, the series doesn't end up on a ruined note akin to many of the recent long time serials.

Other Observations

Considering Lily has known for a long time Robin was incredibly heartbroken about Ted almost marrying Stella, it was a surprise to see Lily actually bet against Robin with Marshal.

I really hope Ted doesn't do something stupid, but knowing Ted….

Will this be 56 hours of Ted's story spread over the next 24 episodes?

The final song is The Shins - "Simple Song", a song about the reading of a last Will and Testament, adding further to the concept that this series ends in total tragedy.

Syfy's latest Monday night drama Defiance is oddly familiar to long time viewers of the network, perhaps maybe too familiar.

Defiance is Syfy's newest "Powerful Mondays" drama to replace the beloved and well received lineup of Monday night. Set in a post apocalyptic Earth circa 2050, it centers around a refugee town filled with various survivors, both human and otherwise, of the destruction of Earth 33 years ago. It has been 33 years since the Votan, a collective of 8 different species fleeing their home system, arrived to Earth seeking refuge, and 15 years since the end of the resultant war once everyone realized that Earth would be the final tomb for all races if they continued on.

Staring Grant Bowler (Ugly Betty) as human Joshua Nolan and Stephanie Leonidas as his adopted Irathient daughter Irisa, the duo happen upon the town as they flee a bandit ambush while scavenging a derelict spaceship that crashed to Earth. Cautiously they start to integrate among the townsfolk, inspiring them and helping band them together against an even more sinister enemy bent on destroying everything in their path.

After two hours of Defiance, a few things come to mind. On the on set, the show has this strange familiarity amongst other SyFy shows. A nomadic father and daughter searching for a future end up in a strange new town full of strange new people. Neither fit in very well, but in the end the father ends up the sherif of the town tasked with protecting the inhabitants. If it sounds familiar, it should, as it's straight up out of Eureka. Joshua Nolan even have a passing resemblance to the grittiness of Sherif Jack Carter while Irisa is a redhead teenager with a temperament like Zoe Carter.

Then if you turn around a think to yourself, this show's deescalation seems oddly similar as well, you have to consider the thematic and stylistic inspiration of the recent Battlestar Galactica and its gritty "survivors of the end of the world" motif. There's a western tone reminiscent of Firefly with plenty of dust, a saloon, and I'm sure to be a train robbery soon enough.

If you look at the truly mixed environment of different species, you have to look back to "Babylon 5" to see such a close knit while kept at arms length integration of characters. All species work together to survive in this harsh new world, yet deep down, there is plenty of intolerance, some of which is centered around race and some centered around pure family rivalry.

Syfy defiantly has taken the playbook of developing a series that hand picks many of the motifs fans have enjoyed over the last 15 years in science fiction television, and even more decades beyond that in terms of general literature. It's hard to fault SyFy for going this route, as the genre in general is by far the hardest to maintain in the long run in a numbers driven environment.

Despite this though, Defiance is a promising series that hopefully doesn't get bogged down by its own self affirmation and excessive rehash of plot we've seen time and time again.

The Doctor returns to the second half of series 7 with an episode full of misdirection that sets up the rest of the series.

For the most part, "The Bells of Saint John" was far from a great episode of Doctor Who, but rather, it was an episode that helped viewers get reacclimatized to the series and reintroduce the newest companion, Clara Oswald. For those that may have forgotten, the Doctor has been searching and trying to find the meaning behind Clara, whom for some reason, has lived multiple incarnations though out history, the latest (to the Doctor) was a victorian governess in the last Christmas special. Today, Clara is once again a nanny in the modern era, helping out a family she was staying with when the previous matron died and until they find a new nanny.

The episode as a whole was merely a launching point for the full on companionship of Clara, with a loosely conceived villainous plot that we've heard before; a seemingly innocuous thing that has taken over all of society is really a gateway to stealing human energy to feed another greater alien power. In this case, our insatiable need for broadly available wifi is really a trojan to hack human minds and steal their consciousness as if they were cattle to be supplied as meals for the Great Intelligence. (The villain revised for the Christmas Special after being missing for decades.)

From the standpoint of a Clara and Doctor episode, though, it works well to fully introduce the character and personality of Clara, a free spirited young lady who sees though all of the Doctor's subtle advances that even he doesn't realize he makes. Viewers of the Matt Smith era of doctor have long seen him as a total flirt when it came to companions, and Clara is a manifestation of all the things we thought about when he used his various one liners.

There were plenty of heavy handed references to the previous episodes with Clara, though, including full on flash backs. It's not really a motif I'm fond of, as in the past it was far more subtle. For a newer viewer, it would feel confusing, and for a long time fan, it would feel condescending. Even the bedroom window scene was so cheesy with Shakespearian nods it was almost unwatchable. Hopefully as we move into the rest of the series with Clara we don't get beat down with additional reminders that Clara has woven herself into the universe much more deeply.

Other Observations

Do you just crook your finger and people just jump into your snog box and fly away?

Who was the "lady in the shop"? It was "probably" Amy Pond.

It was never clear what friend of Clara died. Was it the mother or the previous nanny?

Clara was clever, but no computer skills. They spliced in her super hacker computer skills during their attempt to capture her mind. At the same time she comes up with the name "Oswin." Is this Clara the same super hacker Clara we see in the far future whose mind was in the Darlek collective?

"My conscious says we should kill him." "I'll call HR." "No, he's about to go on holiday. Kill him when he gets back. Let's not be unreasonable."

The TARDIS is a mobile phone.

Summer Falls by Amelia Williams. (aka Amy Pond?)

The Doctor still loves his fez.

They haven't shown off the new TARDIS that much.

UNIT is still running around cleaning up after the Doctor.

The Doctor goes super creepy stalker in Clara's room.

The Bells of Saint John is merely another name for the TARDIS.

What the heck kind of password is "rycbar123"?

"Imagine human souls trapped like flies in the world wide web. Stuck forever, crying out for help." "Isn't that basically Twitter?"

Snogbox is a great new name for the TARDIS

While being mostly a bottle episode centered around the gang at the bar, "Time Travelers" gives fans exactly what they want, massive details into the future mother.

Straight away, Ted spews a whole bunch of juicy details of the mother, including the fact she, in April 2013, was dating a finance guy named Lewis while living on West 115th street.

Despite, the in your face reveals, the episode as a whole is this odd bottle episode that actually takes place entirely inside Ted's head. In his one step removed from psychosis story, Ted interacts with Barney, 20 years from now Ted and Barney (who edge him on towards going to "Robots vs Wrestlers"), and 20 minutes from now Ted and Barney. It's very much a soul seeking episode that Ted tells his kids about some of the anguish he was facing in April 2013, after he spends yet another evening alone in the bar. All the crazy antics between Marshal and Robin are really an event from five years ago. The reality was he was just sitting there in the bar alone again as all his friends were at home working on their own advancing lives.

It's a very dark image to consider, and one that Ted really hasn't expressed before on the series. Looking back, he realizes that he's been clinging on to some of the old fun and memories he and the gang had many years ago, despite the fact that the gang has started to leave him behind. Looking back, Ted sees that he shouldn't have squandered the time he's been spending on himself instead spending them with his friends. Looking back, Ted wishes that had he had the chance to meet the mother 45 days earlier just to have that extra time with her.

But then that brings the HUGE question as Ted monologues about the time he didn't spend with the mother specifically talking about what will happen in 45 days and the future they will have. Suddenly though, the tone of the monologue takes a sharp shift, talking about how he wants the extra 45 days, the extra 45 seconds, the extra moments with her so he can love her just that much longer. It's as if, at the time he tells his children, Ted is more that just recanting the story of meeting the mother for their entertainment, but rather to commemorate the journey that lead him to meeting their mother and how they fell in love. The shift is very subtle, but in the context of the episode as a whole, it's something to consider.

What if this whole time, he was telling the kids about how he met their mother because they didn't know her at all? The episode's premise is the idea of wasting time. Ted himself states "Life is short, and if you ever come across a beautiful crazy moment in it, you need to seize it before it's gone." What if, and this is a big what if…what if the mother dies after their second child. What if everything Ted has remembered the last 8 years is merely the lead up to a brilliantly bright but short moment of happiness. Of all the things, the kids know the very first thing Ted would do if he could would be to go see their mother for those extra moments. It's what would "make the best memory 20 years from now."

Other Observations

"The Fortress" delves into the finer details of Barney's long time bachelor apartment, including all of the tricks, traps, and special features especially handy for a sociopathic womanizer.

The episode as a whole doesn't give us much in terms of story or laughs, but it does provide some humorous insights into some of the crazy modifications Barney has made to his apartment (outlined below). In the end, aside from a silly "Woodworthy Mannor" sub plot (which is obviously a "Downton Abbey" knock off) leading to a Marshal and Ted gay marriage bit, the episode as a whole is pretty weak, and maybe the weakest of the whole season.

We get a closer look at Jeanette in tonight's episode "Bad Crazy" and see how the true depths of her crazy.

After Ted's weak willed attempts to break up with Jeanette, we see that even the hint of a break up can really set her off. Though I think a lot of us can relate to Ted's reaction to this pure and unmitigated crazy, pure an stupid attraction.

I think everyone has been in that relationship where you fall madly with the wrong person for all the wrong reasons, but you just can't help yourself. Ted's relationship with Jeanette is exactly this. She's the ultimate in crazy psycho girlfriend, yet the pure attraction between Ted and Jeanette is undeniable, and a poison on his life. Obviously, we've seen the final result of this relationship, Ted's apartment on fire and his stuff tossed out burning onto the street.

Meanwhie, Robin's storyline is centered around the real concept of adverse fear of holding Marvin, a fear a lot of young single adults can relate to. Babies are the miracle of life and the gift of a good relationship, yet their fragility and purity can freak out the most hardened of people, fearing their own clumsiness in harming the precious infant.

It leads to a humorous bit of future storytelling as Robin recounts the tale of the day Lily left Marvin with Robin alone. In each scene over the next 17 years, it brilliantly tweaks both Robin and Lily's hair and wardrobe to be more and more mature. The slow reveal is great though as we find out the "old lady" that Robin had pick up Marvin was really Mike Tyson, eventually a Senator of New York.

Overall, "Bad Crazy" is a fun romp with the gang, though ultimately ends up feeling very episodic in the grand scheme of the overall storyline.

Other Observations

How did Robin, Marvin, and Tyson make it to the strip club and back again in the time Lily tracked down the pacifier?

"I could eat you up" - Mike Tyson

"You want to know why a girl acts crazy, look at the guy she's dating, then you'll really see some crazy."

Mike Tyson eventually becomes a Senator.

Barneyisms

"I've dated tones of crazy girls and not once have i ever treated them with anything other than….oh right I'm a monster."

Barney adds a brilliant bit of comic aside in the form of a cuckoo clock commenting on Jeanette's personality.

"Cray cray gotta go bye bye before you get stabbed stabbed"

"P.S. I Love You" brings the faithful fans the fourth installment of the Robin Sparkles saga in the form of "Underneath the Tunes," a spoof of VH1's "Behind the Music."

"P.S. I Love You" is a completely silly episode that brings out all the stops to drive all the long term fans a little bit crazy. Filled with cameos of several great Canadians, the "Underneath the Tunes" was a great insight into the history of Robin Sparkles and her transition into Robin Daggers.

The whole episode hinges around the idea of fate, obsession, and the lengths we go to when we fall in love (or obsession) with someone. In stalker Ted's case, he tries to figure out who she was based on random details he remembered. Fortunately, fate seems to conspire to put Ted and Jeanette (Abby Elliot, Saturday Night Live) together, or so it seems. The true stalker is of course Jeanette, who's been stalking Ted for the last year and a half, going as far to buy the same books, ride the same trains, and set fire to his building on campus.

Ted's Dobbler-Dahmer theory does have a lot of grounds in reality, though. According to Ted, grand gestures between two people can either be charming (ala Lloyd Dobbler from Say Anything) or alarming (ala Jeffery Dahmer, serial killer). Experience would suggest that this is fairly true, with the latter being more likely. It's up to fate, though, as when we find that special one, any amount of alarming behavior to the outside will seem completely charming to each other. It's just up to us to not get a restraining order put out against us in the mean time.

Other Observations

Cameo list

Alex Trebek

Geddy Lee (Rush)

Steven Page (Barenaked Ladies)

k.d. Lang

Barney goes to Canada, and while their, his 1/4 Canadian heritage starts to emerge though in his speech.

Of course CBS has the full music video online.

Winter brings out the best advertisements money can buy during the Super Bowl, and this year's selection had some notables.

Overall, I found this year's Super Bowl ad selection to be generally lackluster, there were a few stand outs worth mentioning.

Best Slogan

I definitely have to give this year's best new slogan to Bud Light with their two Bayou spots centered around the slogan "It's only weird if it doesn't work." It's a simple theme that is rememberable and applicable to everyone's life.

Based around the idea of New Orleans Bayou voodoo, the main characters reach out to a local shaman for help with their team. The ads themselves were not terrible, but it's the slogan that stands out.

Funniest Ad

While Doritos had a very strong showing this year as always, I have to give the funniest ad award to Taco Bell with their "Viva Young" ad.

A set of geriatrics escape their nursing home late at night and run around town causing all kinds of mischief as if they were teenagers. The imagery of these seniors in weird and compromising situations makes for a great laugh on top of the hilarious spanish rendition of fun's "We Are Young."

Honorable mentions are of course for Doritos and Speed Stick.

Best Art Ad

Along with humor, Super Bowl ads also encompass ads with high levels of art and emotional content, and this year continued to deliver. While Jeep and USO's ad promoting our wounded veterans was very touching under the reading of Oprah, I have to give the best emotional ad to Ram Trucks "Farmer" read by Paul Harvey.

The ad reminds us as Americans that we founded this country on the backs of the farmers, and that we shouldn't forget their sacrifice and endurance to provide our country with the sustenance we need to be a strong nation.

Fanboy Award

As a final note, I have to say that I'm still a giant Kate Upton fanboy, and as such, I must link the one Mercedees ad she appears in.

While not the funniest or flashiest ad, it does star a number of big names alongside Upton, and personally, I would probably sign that contract if I were in his shoes if she were included.

You can watch all of the ads on the AdBliz YouTube Channel

After seven years, 30 Rock gives us a goofy send off that reminds everyone why we loved the show all this time.

There were plenty of heartfelt goodbyes thought the whole episode, from Jenna realizing she's losing her best friend, the mirror in her studio, to Tracy realizing that everyone that he grew to care about all these years is now leaving him.

Meanwhile, Kenneth is taking his role as the new president in style, wooing new show properties from overseas while making sure to build shows that people actually want to watch. It's as if he actually knows what he's doing, and it's almost terrifying.

Jack is starting to freak out about the fact that he has everything, but he is still missing something. The crux is he doesn't know what he needs anymore, and that goal-less state is a strange and disconcerting feeling.

The moment of the night of course would have to be Liz and Tracy's heartfelt, honest goodbye to each other in the same strip-club the show started in. In the end, Liz and Tracy will miss each other, despite how much Liz wants to kill Tracy.

30 Rock was a remarkable show, though at times it felt like it was more chaos that focused comedy. When it was on its game, though, it was definitely a top level comedy that made the viewers think, not for its crassness, but for the pure speed and subtlety of its humor.

Other Observations

Analyze, strategize, succeed.

Bliss - Beautiful Ladies in Short Shorts.

"Hogcock!"

"Stupid Johnathan" - Jack upon seeing Kenneth's hot redhead assistant.

Jenna finds LA is nothing but blonde hot bodies all younger than her, which is about right.

Lutz has the final choice of lunch, Blimpie's...

Kenneth got his page desk up in his new president office.

Kenneth continues to run NBC far in the future.

I would suspect the final crew shot was an actual shot of the real crew.

"That's our show America! Not a lot of people watched it, but the jokes on you! We got paid anyways!"

"A Goon's Deed in a Weary World" is a mile a minute homage to the crazy that is the TGS studio as we speed towards next week's series finale.

30 Rock has had its ups and downs over the last several years, but the show itself has always stayed consistent in delivering pointed comedy that more or less continuously bites the hand that feeds it, NBC Universal. You can tell the writers always derive their inspiration from their own real life work and situations, which makes for compelling, if not sincere stories, despite the fact that their stories are so far fetched from reality it borders on the absurd. Sometimes though, the writers have a spark of genius where they can just run away creating a solid block of brilliant television that will be difficult to lose after next week.

In the A plot, Liz must choose between picking up her newly adopted twins versus working to her last nerve to save TGS, despite the cast and crew's predictable manner of doing the exact opposite of what she wants them to do. With the biggest show of their lives, the writers spend all afternoon goofing off, Jenna and Tracy spend their entire day promoting their next projects, and Liz has to put off meeting her new kids for the first time to save all their jobs. Surprisingly, this leads to a great touching moment of the series, with the entire cast and crew quitting TGS to let it die for Liz. And with that, "The Girlie Show" is now done, with merely the wrap-up and final goodbyes next week.

Meanwhile, Jack and reenlisted Kenneth as a NBC Page again to provide an "non-interview final interview" tour to new potential CEOs for the company. In turn, we end up with an absolutely brilliant recreation of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. From the potential CEOs matching the characters from the story, to Kenneth's "CB Essington test of character" by offering Mr. MacGuffin wealth beyond his wildest dreams in exchange for stealing a pilot script, to Kenneth's final placement of his NBC pin on Jack's desk as he leaves the company heartbroken, it was obvious the writers had a lot of love for how they wanted to do this final transition, a transition foreshadowed numerous times though out the series.

Other Observations

The picked CEO was named Mr. MacGuffin, which is a hilarious literary joke.

"The Monkey was funny dammit!" - Reference to the short-lived and underrated Animal Practice

Liz's green screen gag is hilarious. I honestly couldn't tell it was a green screen as it was lit explicitly, framed, and shot explicitly to trick us. The only tell looking back was the fact she had an extra hair light to mask the green spill.

"You got lemon, make lemonade!"

Homonym is hilarious in any language.
